We’re back for post number 2 of 2025 and we’re taking another look back at the highlights of the great musical year that was 2024.

We’ve touched on my top albums of the year, now it’s time to shine a light on my Top Singles of 2024!

For those who don’t know, a single is a song often released and promoted ahead of an album release or during the album cycle, however they can be standalone releases. They can be accompanied by a music video or remixes.

SZA

Saturn

From “SOS Deluxe: LANA”

One thing about SZA, she will TEASE us with a snippet and Saturn was no execption. First debuted with a performance at the Grammys then proceeded to torture us without an official release for another 2 weeks.

This was worth the wait, beautiful songwriting about the dilemma of bad things always happening to good people and the dreaming of a place of safety to escape to.

Doechii ft JT

Alter Ego

Standalone release

This was an unexpected favourite and duo that worked well, this house-esque ode to the Floridian swamp featuring the witty feature from JT.

They delivered across the board, it was a shame it was one of many releases from Doechii to not make it on a project and didn’t get the love it deserved but they delivered across the board, accompanied by 2 separate music videos.

Summer Walker

Heart of a Woman

Lead single for upcoming album

They could NEVER make me hate Ms Walker, this one sounds like an R&B album cut straight out the 90s which I fell in love with from the snippet.

There’s so much more that I could ask for from this song that could’ve done it justice even further but what she gave us still slaps regardless.

Latto

Sunday Service

From “Sugar Honey Iced Tea”

Who else other than Latto pulled up to someone’s hood with 20 blacked out Suburbans, told them to stop tweeting and get in the booth?

Starting the year strong Latto released Sunday Service amidst the “beef” with Ice Spice in response to the track “Think U the Shit (Fart)”. Easily the most pointless and unbalanced battle of the decade, Latto is a talented writer and rapper who should’ve never wasted her time with that back and forth but without that we would’ve never received Sunday Service.

Flo

Caught Up

From “Access All Areas”

The talented trio have been in my radar for a while since they burst onto the scene with Cardboard Box. This has undoubtedly been their first release to GRAB me from day 1.

From the beginning this song felt like a real R&B record, from the harmonies to the bridge, the obscure sample and the cherry on top was Jay Versace on the production of course.

Muni Long

Ruined Me

From “Revenge”

As someone who loves R&B, Muni Long is definitely someone to tap into. Her debut album ‘Public Displays of Affection: The Album’ was a great body of work and she delivered with amazing gems on this follow up ‘Revenge’ which gave us Ruined Me.

She ticks every box in what you could ask from an R&B record here:

Songwriting

Dramatics

Vocals

Real Ad libs

She’s continued to do this song justice in all live performances and I’ve continued to rinse it since its release.

Kendrick Lamar ft SZA

Luther

From “GNX”

Instant favourite, similar to the album this song would’ve been #1 but just needed more time to marinate.

This song is brilliant from the Luther Vandross sample to the chemistry between Kendrick and SZA. Kendrick never misses when it comes to collabs with female R&B artists, this R&B leaning melodic rap record shows his range as an artist so well.

The importance of rappers understanding their singing abilities and using it to their strengths, is so importance as they compliment each other well on this track vocally.

Kehlani

After Hours

From “CRASH”

Oh Kehlani, from the day she dropped the snippet I knew I was in for a favourite. We had a few issues in the beginning with the key of the drums but she took the advice like a professional and fixed it for us.

The song, the video, the cheat code sample. This song lived in my rotation all year and ended up in the top 5 of my Spotify Wrapped, a great lead single for her Crash era such a shame the era itself was cut short.

Alex Vaughn

Hit A Wall

From upcoming album

This was an instant favourite for me, very rarely have I come across a song on an Instagram ad and paid attention. This one grabbed me and went straight to number one on MY charts.

This song is REAL R&B, it feels like old R&B without the feeling of being a tribute or a carbon copy attempt. This feels real, it’s put her on my radar and I’ll keep an eye out for whatever she brings next.

Kendrick Lamar

Euphoria

Standalone Single

My #1 song of the year, this one goes without much explanation. Not Like Us was the winning blow in the rap beef and the hit of the year on the charts, however, Euphoria was the best song to come out of the battle as a whole.

He effortlessly and so eloquently picked apart Drake, called his character into question whilst displaying what rap really is. Beautifully selected sample, a hip hop track full of conviction and passion. A song I NEED to experience live.
